The surveys were commissioned by the Nature Conservancy Council in 1987. All major sites containing coastal shingle habitats in Great Britain were covered by this survey. Vegetation was sampled at multiple quadrats within each site; however, for many locations, only a single grid reference is available covering the whole of each site.
