PSA analysis of the samples was used to determine the proportion of mud to sand in the sample, the percentage of gravel being insignificant across the site. A raster was interpolated within the UTMzone 31N projection (EPSG:32631) from the percentage mud against sand using a tension spline method. The method was selected for the following reasons: 1) The relative sparseness of the input points 2) The resultant raster conforms closely with the sampled data where the two intersect 3) The input sample data may not capture the full range of the data across the site. Interpolation was performed using default value in ArcGIS for weighting and number of points. A raster cell size of 875m, roughly 1/4 of the horizontal distance between sampling points, was used as a compromise between resolution and overinterpolation of the sparse dataset. The resultant raster was classified as follows, based off of the standard JNCC interpretation of benthic habitats from PSA data (McBreen at al., 2010) : value > 0.8 : "sand" value <=0.8 : "mud". The classifed raster was polygonised and clipped to the ncMPA boundary extent before conversion to standard DEF fields and MNCR/EUNIS habitat classifications.
