Ten primary shores were studied in detail : Da Rigs, North Boulder Beach, Ruscar, Head O'Da Taing, Trolli Geo, Head O'Da Baa, Dog Geo, Da Doon Banks, Surpeidle and Fisheads. Cover/abundance values were estimated fro the seaweeds and sedentary fauna present on the belt transects. Maps showing the accessibility, exposure and vulnerability to oil spillages were prepared for the island. Dogwhelk populations were sampled on each primary shore, length/aperture ratios calculated and related to wave exposure on each shore. The tidal range for the island is about 2m. Transects were set up from the low water mark to the top of the shore. Stations were located at 0.2m intervals up the shore. At each vertical station the abundance of the species present was recorded in a 5m * 0.2m quadrat. Shore profiles were also measured.
